stores are different, what do you do, everyone says going to lowe's, home depot, we know they're going to benefit, just no question, but what kind of legs or impact on the stock? i want to take you back to hurricane katrina. when that happened late august of 2005, both of these stocks were on the move up. both of them actually traded right near their all time high and in the last few years they tumbled. lowe's went to, and home depot ultimately with 21 with the cash of the market. and people who bought katrina, and long-term investment got waxed pretty good. fast forward, lowe's last time missed the street by a nickel and home depot beat by 4 cents and concensus estimates, and went up home depot, there's a downgrade recently on home depoe and two upgreats on lowe's. to me, i can lie home depot, i think they have better operators and storms and when the storm path went and i just happen to think it's a better operation, better historical execution, so i would be willing to pay extra for it, for both of the stocks. cheryl: and-- >> $30 for lowe's, 58 for home depot and break out 63 for h

and you've got to change with them or you're going to lose money. i had my plays. home depot. thriving southeastern chain, still not in the new york area. i knew it carried tools, had materials to rebuild. stanley works and black and decker. they make tools again. morgan doors, high end. pittsburgh plate glass, windows. insulation. what was i going to do? i had my list out. i was going to call my clients. i didn't have any discretion. i had to make some cold calls, urge people to buy those stocks at the opening. here's what you need to know about them. i had total faith that one, i could get those stocks within a quarter or half point from where they went out the night before. and by the way, those were the days when we traded in quarters and halves. and two, i could make a buck or two when everyone figured out what i knew or read it in the paper that the storm had caused hardware sales to surge. there was pretty much a full day's delay for almost everything. very few people watched the equivalent of cnbc back then. we didn't even have television at goldman in those days. no easy acces

retailer home depot continues building its share price. it was the best percentage gainer of the dow industrials, up 2.4%, closing at an eleven- and-a-half year high. optimism surrounding the housing market has clearly helped home depot, and today's data on job creation helps optimism about housing. we saw that with several homebuilr stocks. lear jumped 6.9%, d.r. horn gained 6.2%, and pulte group rose 6%. there was a jump in mortgage applications in the past week, adding to optimism about housing. one more note related to real estate. residential mortgage servicing firm ocwen financial hit a new high all time today. ocwen will spend $750 million in cash and stock to buy a privately held mortgage servicer. ocwen shares have almost tripled in the past year as it has been buying mortgage servicing businesses, managing mortgage payments and foreclosures for lenders. oil prices were falling down even as the u.s. had some encouragg economic news. instead, weak data from europe and china pushed crude down. among the noteworthy energy stocks also lower: oil servicing firm f.m.c. technologie
